Visual Arts

Visual arts at NCCS are experiential and processed-based, drawing on the creative potential of each child. Exposure to a wide variety of media and approaches, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, multimedia techniques, photography, ceramics, innovative design, metals and woodworking, ensures that students will understand and appreciate the arts as an integral part of the human experience. Benefitting from three state-of-the-art studios, several collaborative maker-spaces, and a fully-equipped woodshop and foundry, all students have multiple opportunities to explore their interests.

Beginning with our youngest students and continuing through Middle School, arts classes are often correlated with related academic topics. For example, Middle School students will explore perspective and portraiture as part of their overall study of the Renaissance.

In the Upper School, seventh graders are required to take a trimester of general studio art and then may choose a trimester of woodshop or maker/design lab. Eighth and ninth graders choose from a variety of visual arts electives including, Ceramics, Painting, Short Film, Photography, Boat Building, Printmaking and 3D Art & Animation.

All visual arts classes use premium-grade materials while also being mindful of the school’s dedication to sustainability. Exhibitions of student work are continuously displayed throughout the campus.
