Author of "The Lemonade War" Series Visits Lower School

Jacqueline Davies, author of “The Lemonade War” series, and many other popular children’s books, met with Lower School students, Sept. 26. Lower School Library Jean Stevens reflects of the author’s visit:
There is nothing quite like an author visit to foster enthusiasm in reading and writing. When an author visits school, the children have the opportunity to learn about the author’s process in writing and to experience the struggles and joys the author experiences in creating written work.  When Jacqueline Davies met with the first and second graders, she shared her deep knowledge about pandas before reading her newest book, “Panda Pants,” to the children. The children make a real connection with the author, and become more engaged with the author’s books. With the third and fourth graders, Davies explained how she got her idea for “The Lemonade War” series, and her exciting book trailers have motivated the kids to read the entire series.

Author visits are wonderful opportunities to be exposed to a “real artist” and to be able to see oneself as a real artist too. By bringing an author to school, the children are exposed to new literature and are encouraged to read different books. Author visits are also community builders:  when many children read the same books, they feel a connection with each other. And the effect is long-lasting…years after an author visit, children continue to feel a connection to the author’s books.
