Academics

Learning Resources

New Canaan Country School provides a demanding course of study for students across all grade levels. We strive to guide all students to gain independence in their work habits, confidence in their ability to learn and the ability to retain and master academic material.

The school understands that children progress at different rates, and that some students may encounter learning challenges at various points in their academic development. Beyond the classroom teachers, who are trained to teach, assess, and differentiate, there is a learning resource teacher in each division who works with students with demonstrated and documented academic needs. Working in close cooperation with classroom teachers, the teachers do intensive work in reading, writing, organization, study skills and math.

Our Approach

New Canaan Country School uses a developmental approach to help students achieve academic milestones. Learning Resource teachers use traditional, as well as brain-based, learning methods to help students bridge the gap between their intellectual potential and academic achievement. We get to know our students as learners and help them with strategies to approach their learning in the most appropriate and effective manner. In addition, we are committed to increasing children’s self-awareness and confidence in their individual strengths and abilities. By helping children understand their unique learning styles, they will be empowered to learn strategies to help compensate for challenges and to celebrate their successes.
