Kindergarteners Share "Body Maps"
Country School kindergarteners hosted a special exhibit in March 2018 as a culmination of their study on “How are we alike and different?” The students served as docents, sharing “body maps” they had created over the prior months.
The body mapping project is an interdisciplinary study of identity. Through read-alouds, visits from experts, discussions, science experiments, art, music, movement, theater and play, children built a vocabulary with which to discuss themselves and others.
The students began with a study of their physical bodies, closely looking at hair, eyes, ears, nose, mouth and clothing and step-by-step created a “map” of themselves. They then created a second interior layer of their map, which explored their likes, dislikes, values and emotions.
At the end of the study, parents were invited in to an exhibit of the maps.
