Dear incoming Second Grade families,
Summer vacation is just around the corner, and it is time to begin thinking about summer reading. We will begin next year with a study of identity. Most importantly, we will discuss the importance of having respect for individual differences. With this in mind, we have created and attached a list of books that delve into this theme. We ask that you choose two books (one from two different categories) from the following Libguide
. Please read them aloud to your child and spend time discussing the content, characters, themes and any other details that pique your child’s interest.
Of course, we do not want to limit your child’s summer reading to the aforementioned choices; we want each child to read and be read to as much as possible. To assist you in this effort, the Lower School faculty has compiled a list of recommended titles for summer reading. There are links to award-winning books and other excellent sites that you might like to explore. Please see the sidebar.
As you help your child to establish a summer reading routine, please keep in mind that our goal is to help children become successful life-long readers. To achieve this goal, we hope the children will continue to choose “just right” books, those that are at a comfortable reading level. If your child is excited to read a more advanced text, we encourage you to read that selection aloud rather than have him/her try to tackle it independently.
