Tuition & Financial Aid

At New Canaan Country School, we believe that economic diversity is essential to the educational experience for all families.

It is a long-standing policy of the Board of Trustees that the cost of an independent school education should not be a deterrent to any prospective student or family. Country School offers need-based financial aid to qualified students whose families need support to afford full tuition.

Admission and financial aid are two separate processes. Applying for financial aid has no bearing on the Admission Committee’s decision regarding acceptance into the school.

Eligibility

Families with a wide range of incomes may qualify for financial aid. Awards are based on circumstances unique to each family, and the process takes into account many variables. We are always happy to discuss your individual circumstances with you should you have questions concerning eligibility for financial aid.

  • All financial aid is based on an individual family’s need. No awards are made on the basis of a student’s academic, athletic, or other talents. Financial aid is awarded as a direct grant against annual expenses for tuition, transportation, lunch, and Extended Day costs.
  • While family income is an important consideration in the size of the grant, factors such as assets, liabilities, and the number of children in tuition-charging schools or colleges are also considered. Parents are expected to support the applicant financially to the extent they can.
  • An estimated potential salary based on education and previous work will be included in our financial aid calculations for any non-working (or employed less than half time) parent whose children are all of school age.
  • Financial aid application forms must be submitted each year. Families can expect the same level of support throughout each child’s years at Country School if their demonstrated need remains the same. The financial aid grant is likely to change if the family situation changes significantly. If a family does not qualify for financial aid upon admission, it is unlikely they will qualify in subsequent years unless there is a significant change in family finances.
  • All applications for financial aid are held in strictest confidence. Only members of the Financial Aid Committee have access to the records.

Additional Charges

List of 3 frequently asked questions.

  • Lunch

Families are charged $1,200 for lunch per child - available for Grades 1-9 only. Tuition includes a charge for milk for all children and snacks for younger children. Beginners who stay for the afternoon program and all Kindergarteners bring their own lunch.

  • Transportation

Children ages 4 and above are eligible to ride the bus; the anticipated bus charge is $2,275 for those living outside of New Canaan; the charge for those living in New Canaan is less – estimated at $1,350, since the town is required to contribute toward the cost of transportation for all town residents. The policy of the school is to charge all families for our bus service if they live near the scheduled routes. Only those who live close enough to school to walk safely or who live beyond the borders of our bus system are exempt from this charge. Exceptions may be made for eligible Beginners and Kindergarten children whose parents may choose not to have their child use the bus. This mandatory-fee policy has been adopted by the Board so that Country School can be a regional school, not just local, school, with all parents sharing the expense for transportation and thereby holding the per-child cost to a minimum.
  • Miscellaneous

Charges for trips, skating, and various activities are billed throughout the year as the events occur.

Tuition Payment Options

Upon signing the enrollment contract, families are responsible for their portion of the school year’s expenses (less the amount of any financial aid grant). Information regarding payment plan options is available from the Admission Office.
