Eighth Graders Named Co-Winners of 2017 Spelling Bee

New Canaan Country School eighth graders Dania Zein of Darien and Shane Carbin of Norwalk were named co-winners of the school’s 2017 Spelling Bee held Feb. 23.
The annual event was comprised of 324 students from the Middle School (grades 5 and 6) and Upper School (grades 7, 8 and 9).

The Bee’s finale was held in the school’s auditorium, where the students competed through multiple rounds of eliminations. After correctly spelling words ranging in difficulty from “receive” and “subpoena” to “chrysanthemum” and “stationery,” Zein and Carbin found themselves alone in competition. What followed was a lengthy and potentially never-ending “championship round” through which both students persevered, showing great confidence and competence. Declaring both students equally deserving of the title, the judges named Zein and Carbin co-winners of the 2017 competition.
