Fifth Graders Examine Medieval Art at The Cloisters

Julie Porter, 5th Grade Teacher
The fifth grade visited The Cloisters (part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art) as a complement to our medieval unit in English and social studies.
Within the museum’s Romanesque and Gothic walls, students examined the world-famous Unicorn Tapestries, visited an herb garden with plants used by medieval midwives, built miniature rounded archways out of stone, discussed the symbols on tomb effigies and investigated religious components of stunning stained glass windows.

Students also enjoyed seeing where in Europe (Spain, France, Netherlands, etc.) each piece was collected. They were especially impressed by the incredible attention to detail in many of the works of art, including etchings in ivory and gold-plated playing cards. Students have learned a great deal about the Middle Ages but the ability to see authentic medieval artwork and architecture in this setting is always a treat!
