8th & 9th Grade Trips Build Teamwork and Resilience

Alex Wellman, Head of Upper School
Eighth and ninth grade students spent the week of Sept. 11 on grade-level trips to Camp Dudley and the Appalachian Trail.

The annual trip to Camp Dudley (Westport, NY) provided this year’s 8th grade class with time to unify, connect with teachers and classmates outside the classroom, and display fortitude, resilience, leadership, and teamwork through a variety of outdoor activities. Over the course of the four-day stay in the Adirondacks this year, 8th graders hiked mountains, spent time on both high and low ropes courses, and engaged in other activities that challenged the body and mind while fostering an environment that encouraged teamwork and community building. Morning talks by NCCS faculty members served as highlights of the trip, covering the following topics: priorities, taking risks, and empathy.

On the Outdoor Action Trip (O.A.T.), Country School's 9th grade students broke up into four groups and spent three days hiking and camping on the Appalachian Trail in northwestern CT and southwestern MA. In addition to the physical challenges of O.A.T., which included navigating complex scrambles and other forms of variable terrain, 9th graders also collaborated on campsite setup and cleanup, cooking, and delegating tasks essential to their group’s success. With its focus on class bonding and leadership, O.A.T. is a longstanding, celebrated, and essential component of the 9th grade experience at Country School.
