Varsity Cougars Get Rolling Against Greens Farms

Sean Robb
The New Canaan Country School Boys’ Varsity earned its first win of the season by leading from wire to wire in an impressive team victory over visiting Greens Farms Academy.

Two months after tryouts kicked off, the NCCS varsity team finally had its home opener after a postponement in December pushed back the much-anticipated first contest in the Watson gym. Ninth-grade leaders Rett and Tyler got the squad off to a hot start, totaling six points in the first quarter, supplemented by a pair of buckets by Jack to go with his deft dime to Rett for a layup. The 2-3 zone on the defensive end limited the visitors to long-range jumpers, allowing zero field goals and a single free throw as the hosts built a 10-1 lead heading into the second stanza.

In the second quarter, defense ruled again, led by pesky defending at the top of the zone by Cyrus and Luke. While GFA's best shooter found his stroke for seven points in the frame, Bailey, Ben and John controlled the defensive boards to prevent second-chance opportunities for the visitors. The eight points conceded were by far the lowest in a half for Cougars, and Jamie’s six-point burst helped push the advantage to 22-8 at the halftime whistle.

NCCS pushed the lead to 18 early in the third quarter, but a late surge by Greens Farms brought its deficit back to 14, canceling out a pair of field goals by Henry and a jaw-dropping jumper by Luke from the free-throw line.

Energized by the late-third quarter surge, GFA started the fourth with renewed energy. Despite this, the Cougars matched their second-quarter output of 12 points, led by a pair of field goals each by Matt, Rett and Tyler. Coupled with a strong effort on defense, the hosts staved off the threat and never allowed the visitors to close within single digits.

After two tough road games to start the season, the Cougars hope the 42-28 win jumpstarts the squad, as the team can build off success in all phases of the game.

Game notes: NCCS went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe, marking the best FT% of the season for the team and narrowly edging GFA's 3-for-5 effort. … Greens Farms' top scorer accounted for 18 of the team’s 28 points, while the hosts had seven different scorers on the night, including two in double digits (Tyler with 12 and Rett with 10). … The visitors hit four three-pointers in the contest, while NCCS scored all of its baskets on free-throws and two-point FGs.
