8th Graders Meet Middle School Teacher from Japan

In the Upper School, teachers continue to deliver on their content and skill-building while at the same time looking for ways to leverage online learning and reimagine both everyday lessons and signature course or grade-level events. Mr. Fredo's 8th grade English class had the opportunity to Zoom with Greenwich Academy alumna, Morgan Hearne, to discuss a book they had recently finished reading.
In his work of non-fiction, Learning to Bow, Bruce Feiler examines Japanese culture through the eyes of an American teaching at a Japanese school (grades 7-9) in the early 90s. Feiler not only writes of Japanese culture as a whole, but also takes a deep dive into school culture and the Japanese educational system. Ms. Hearne is currently teaching at a Japanese middle school about an hour outside of Tokyo, in a program very similar to the one Mr. Feiler participated in. Students asked Ms. Hearne if the book did or did not still reflect the life of middle school students in Japan. In addition, our students asked how Japan was dealing with the COVID-19 crisis and how it was impacting her students and their education.

"Ms. Hearne enlivened our study of Japan,” said Mr. Fredo.
