New Canaan Country School Students Earn National Recognition on World Language Exams

Students from New Canaan Country School’s Upper School division (Grades 7-9) participated in the 2023 National World Language exams in March and April yielding 59 medals of honor as well as state and national distinctions of merit. Of particular note, eighth graders Grace O’Donnell and Liany Otero both scored in the 99th percentile on the National Spanish Exam. 

Sixteen French language students received recognition on the 2023 National French exam. Students who achieved silver and bronze honors at the national level included: (silver) Louisa Gosk of Darien, Maggie Newport of Norwalk, Kat Palmer of Stamford, Katya Bank of Westport, Lily Arneill of Darien, Lilly Peake of New Canaan, Aubry Grant of Darien, Opal Thompson of Stamford and Charlotte Parker of New Canaan; (bronze) Itzel Llamas of Norwalk, Syndi Francis of Trumbull, James Knowles of Rowayton, Caroline Irwin of New Canaan, Avery Brooks of New Canaan, Edie Goodyear of New Canaan, and Cameron Ableman of Norwalk.
“Our students have worked hard all year and it is great to see it all come to fruition,” said Upper School World Language Teacher Christiane Lundquist, who teaches French and Spanish.

Thirty-five Spanish language students were recognized for their exceptional achievement on the 2023 National Spanish exam including: seventh-graders Lucy Anne Kurtz of Darien, Olivia Parker of New Canaan, Paul Vartanian of Darien, Will DeSantis of Stamford, and Emma Bernard of Greenwich; eighth-graders Grace O’Donnell of Darien, James DiBiasio of Darien, Cullen Smith of New Canaan and Liany Otero of Norwalk, all of whom received the gold medal distinction with scores of 96% and above. Silver medals were awarded to seventh-graders Caroline Bernard of Greenwich, Zachary Britt-Friedman of Stamford, Annie Hanson of New Canaan, Eva Juarez-Lace of Shelton, Zoe Malkoun of New Canaan, Justin Mouzon of Norwalk, Van Osberg of Darien, Matthias Yoo of Pound Ridge, Claire Hanson of New Canaan and Eva Mackenzie of Darien; eighth-graders William Gallagher of Rowayton, Claire McCormick of Rowayton, Michaela Springer of Redding, Rowan Stewart of Darien, and Katharine Tocks of Norwalk; ninth-graders Caroline Coniglio of New Canaan, Jonathan Gavidia of Norwalk, Daley Keough of Darien, and Eleanor Levinson of Darien. Bronze medals were awarded to eighth graders James (Finn) DeGulis of Darien, Lillian Kanter of New Canaan, James Moody of Darien, and Ralph (Blake) Williams of Norwalk; ninth-graders Charlotte Cooper of New Canaan, Capone Andrade of Bridgeport, and Grady O’Connor of Darien.
