Students Take Center Stage in LS Arts Assembly

First and second grade students performed original dances they choreographed themselves for an audience of friends and family in the school’s auditorium, April 19.

The Lower School “Arts Assembly” as it is known, is a beloved Country School tradition, a kind of creative rite of passage for students in which first and second graders create and choreograph all of the dances themselves for a one-hour performance. They performed earlier in the week for peers and younger students during a dress rehearsal, and then held this performance for family.
“The Arts Assembly is the culmination of a tremendous amount of hard work and is quintessentially Country School in that it is process oriented and child centered,” said Head of Lower School Meaghan Mallin. “The children create their performances through student voice, collaboration and creativity, resulting in a performance that is delivered with confidence, pride and a tremendous amount of joy.”

Lower School Music & Movement Teacher Jennifer Thiemann oversaw the production with support from grade-level teachers, but the work was very much an expression of the students' collective creativity.
