Ninth graders Alexis Rodgers, Deyanté McKinstry, Daly Baker and Audrey Magnusen, were among the 33 students who delivered “Dove bags” of food for 43 local families on Fri., Dec. 15.
Country School students participated in its first Hour of Maker. For the past two years, there was a similar event, Hour of Code, which focused on computer programming. However, this year the school decided to do a hands-on Maker project. Working with their buddies, every student built their own Car-Bot. Girls’ Varsity Hockey had a strong start to their season with two decisive wins; a 4-2 victory over Upland Country Day School and an 8-3 win against Choate.
New Canaan Country School congratulates alumna Annie Leonard ’11 (Darien, CT), a member of Middlebury College’s field hockey team, for clinching the NCAA Championship on Nov. 19. The 4-0 win over top-ranked Messiah (22-1) is the second championship Middlebury has secured in three years. The second-ranked Panthers finish their season tying the school-record with 20 wins (20-2), and an NESCAC Championship.
First and second graders took to the stage on Nov. 29 for their annual Lower School Arts Assembly, titled “Emotion in Motion.” Dressed all in black with a colorful backdrop of sparkly paintings they made, children expressed themselves through dance and movement. VIEW PHOTOS & VIDEO.
The entire fifth and sixth grades headed to a theater in downtown Wilton last week to see one of the first showings of Wonder, a movie based on the bestselling young adult novelby R.J. Palacio.
Ninth grader Audrey Magnusen led the NCCS Varsity Girls’ Soccer team to an undefeated season this fall—a season characterized by Coach Sean Robb as “delirious and deluge-ional!”
As luck would have it, Jack Johnson chose to try Cross Country in the 5th grade. “Really, it was a process of elimination. We were required to choose a competitive sport in Middle School,” explained Jack, now a ninth grader, during remarks he made at the Upper School Fall Sports Assembly on Nov. 13. “Football didn’t appeal, and I hadn’t played soccer since first grade when my parents said I spent most of the game talking to myself about the shapes of the clouds. I didn’t really consider myself an ‘athlete’.” That’s all changed now.
Faculty, staff and students gathered on Friday, Nov. 10 as the last beam was laid into place during a “topping off” ceremony for the Susan Haigh Carver ’51 Dining Hall & Commons. During the previous few days, students, faculty and staff had signed their names and written some inspirational messages on the beam. As is tradition in this ceremony, a school flag, an American flag and a small evergreen tree – symbolizing new growth – were attached to the final beam before it was raised.
Two Upper School teams celebrated undefeated seasons this fall. Girls’ Field Hockey recorded a final tally of 9-0-1 against perennial powerhouse teams including Greenwich Academy and Sacred Heart of Greenwich.
Author Ann Malaspina, an award-winning author of nonfiction and fiction books for children and teens, gave Lower School students tips on tapping into characters’ authentic stories during a visit to Country School on Nov. 2.
Members of the Country School community raised red, yellow and white lanterns at the annual Light the Night Walk on Oct. 28. More than 60 students, faculty, staff and alumni attended the event and raised $5,500 (surpassing their goal of $5,000!) for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
New Canaan Country School welcomed noted author and educator, Ana Homayoun, to campus Wed., Oct. 25 and Thurs., Oct 26 to share insights and discuss strategies for navigating an ever-changing social media world with parents, faculty and students of the pre-K through grade 9 school. The Wed. evening parent event, which was open to the public, drew over 100 in attendance.
Eighth graders took on the roles of characters from John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, holding a mock trial to argue the fate of George Milton, accused of murdering his best friend, Lennie Small.
As work commences on the new Susan Haigh Carver ’51 Dining Hall and Commons, the Country School Archives presents a look back at the history of dining here at the school. The exhibit, displayed in the Grace House Lobby, will be open through January 2018.
New Canaan Country School students, faculty and staff gathered together around the flagpole Sept. 9 to officially celebrate the start of the school year.
New Canaan Country School welcomes several new faculty members and staff members this year. They arrive at Country School with range of experience from a variety of schools. “Joining us this year are an immensely talented group who are passionate about educating children and transforming lives,” said Head of School Rob Macrae.
On the heels of Closing Exercises, 18 recent Country School graduates boarded a plane for the Galapagos Islands for the experience of a lifetime. They traveled to the volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean to view some the world’s most amazing wildlife, practice their Spanish and to immerse themselves in a different culture.
New Canaan Country School’s campus was bustling with activity this summer. In addition to the usual joyful noises of children participating in the six-week Horizons Summer Enrichment Program, several major campus improvement projects were also underway.
New Canaan Country School has named Christopher Santa, Maria Flores and Amira El Hattab as the 2017-2018 Horizons Scholars. They will attend New Canaan Country School this fall as fifth, sixth and eighth graders, respectively, and have been participants in the Horizons Program at New Canaan Country School for several years.
More than 30 Country School alumni, faculty and former faculty members have joined Horizons for the summer. "Horizons benefits greatly from the passion and talent of our NCCS teachers and assistants," says Executive Director Kerry Stevens.
New Canaan Country School held its Closing Exercises on Thursday, June 15. Head of School Dr. Robert P. Macrae encouraged the 45 ninth grade graduates of the Class of 2017 to develop an attitude of gratitude and practice positive habits of body and mind.
New Canaan Country School Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse scored an undefeated season with a 7-0 final record. The team, consisting of Upper School students (grades 7, 8 and 9), competed in the Fairchester Athletic League, made up of independent schools from Fairfield and Westchester Counties. The Country School Cougars netted 103 goals scored versus just 27 allowed, showing their strength at both ends of the field.
On May 30, 2017, Head of School Dr. Robert P. Macrae and President of the Board of Trustees Steve Rodgers announced the school’s plans to begin a transition in leadership. A search will commence immediately for the next Head of School. Dr. Macrae will continue to serve as Head of School for the 2017-2018 school year.
On May 24 and 25, New Canaan Country School eighth graders presented at the school’s annual World Congress, a hallmark event of their year-long study of world cultures.
The second grade took visitors on a road trip across the United States this week. For months, each second grader studied a particular state, learning about everything from topography to cuisine, traditions to native species. VIEW PHOTOS.
At Country School, igniting student’s curiosity can be as simple as taking a walk in the woods. Seventh grade science students do just that, spending their first trimester exploring the school’s 75-acre campus - much of it woods and trails - as part of their life science curriculum.
In support of Country School’s ongoing relationship with the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, the Lower School held its annual spring food drive from May 8-17. All four grades kicked off the drive with a hands on, age appropriate lesson, which focused on the importance of the Food Bank and how it serves our neighbors in need.
New Canaan Country School’s Middle School Robotics Team participated in the eighth annual ROBOnanza!, a competition for Westchester and Fairfield County independent schools held in Greenwich, May 13. The “Cougar Bots,” (robots built completely out of LEGOs® and programmed by the fifth and sixth graders), contended against robots from other schools in three levels of challenges.
Maddie Barto ran around the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island followed by her classmates. She was scanning the 700,000 names inscribed looking for the name of her great grandfather, Vincenzo Biocca, an Italian Immigrant. Success – Maddie was thrilled!
We are pleased to welcome Holly Donaldson Casella ’04 to the position of Director of Alumni Affairs, beginning July 1. Holly has stayed connected since graduating from Country School, having served as a reunion class chair and a panelist on several alumni networking events.

More than twenty NCCS students from all four divisions gathered in Perrine Commons to sort and pack hundreds of gently used books collected during the annual LS Earth Day Book Recycling Project.
This past weekend, more than 500 people attended Family Fun Night and more than 150 parents, faculty and staff volunteered to make an important difference in our community. In celebration of Earth Day, Country School families donated several thousands of used books to a popular recycling program in the Lower School library. This week, Lower School and Kindergarten students were given coupons to go shopping and “buy” these books in the library.
Sixth through eighth grade students at New Canaan Country School have created interactive Augmented Reality projects which are now on exhibit in the Middle and Upper School buildings.
Members of the ninth grade class led more than 400 New Canaan Country School students, their families and teachers to serve 14 local non-profit organizations April 1.
New Canaan Country School eighth grader Arjun Dayal won top honors at two Westchester First Lego League (FLL) Competitions. As part of the competition, he also created a coyote sighting app that will benefit his local community.

The New Canaan Country School girls’ squash team earned a fifth place national ranking following three days of hard-fought matches in the 2017 U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships held at Yale University Jan. 27 - 29.
Sixth graders wrote and delivered speeches on issues about which they are passionate – the importance of sports and arts in schools, child labor, homelessness, pets, homework. The speeches were thoroughly researched, well-rehearsed and delivered with courage and confidence!
New Canaan Country School Boys’ varsity basketball placed second among the five independent schools who participated in the annual tournament held Sat., Jan. 21 in Greenwich.
Fifty educators from around the state gathered at New Canaan Country School for a technology innovation workshop, “Technology Innovation in the Lower School Classroom,” on Jan. 19. Country School teachers presented creative ways that they are using technology in the Kindergarten-Grade 5 classroom at the workshop sponsored by Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).
New Canaan Country School students collected more than 1,000 toothbrushes for a project that culminated on Jan. 25 with more than 50 volunteers – Country School students, parents and grandparents – who worked side by side to assemble dental supply kits for the Stamford-based humanitarian aid organization Americares. The kits will soon be distributed to 30 different clinics across the country through Americares’ Oral Health Project.
“Alafia!” The joyous and vibrant musical evening last Friday night led by Infinite Roots founder Kwame Jones began with a simple African greeting of peace and blessings. More than 100 NCCS community members sang, danced and drummed after a veritable feast of African foods prepared by Country School families.
Throughout its 100-year history, Country School has been a leader in social-emotional development. Building on the school’s recent work with the Mission Skills Assessment™, the school has recently added components of the RULER program, developed at the Yale University Center for Emotional Intelligence, to its repertoire of tools to help students fully develop their social-emotional skills.
“Research shows that there is a direct correlation between emotional intelligence and academic performance. How we feel affects how we learn,” said Dr. Robert P. Macrae in his announcement of the new year-long Wellness Wednesday initiative.
Country School eighth graders put their Mandarin language skills to the test by interviewing Chinese graduate students from the University of Connecticut during a class period in January.
On Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, New Canaan Country School welcomed to campus guest speaker, Yusef Salaam, who as a young teen was wrongly convicted of heinous crimes against a female jogger in Central Park in 1989, and more recently was featured in the Ken Burns documentary: Central Park Five. Mr. Salaam joined the school’s faculty, staff and parents for their third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast and delivered powerful thoughts about today’s civil rights realties in America through his unique story.
The seeds of social and environmental responsibility were planted early for Country School graduate Lisa Pike Sheehy ’83, who recently oversaw the implementation of Patagonia’s pledge to donate 100 percent of all Black Friday sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment, earning the brand a record-breaking $10 million, five times what had been expected.

Mo is scheduled to return to campus Friday, May 19, to accept the honor and to share with students, alumni and guests highlights of his career in both professional baseball and as an active supporter and contributor to several community-based organizations and charities. All are welcome to attend.
