6th Graders Learn Probability through Games of Chance

Suzy Sensbach, 6th grade teacher
The sixth grade Probability Fair combines mathematical and statistical principles of probability with hands-on experiential fun and games.
Working in 2-person teams, students conceptualized and then constructed games of chance which were set up in the Cafeteria creating a fair-like atmosphere. Student and faculty players then circulated through the room trying their luck!

Through this project, students learned about simple vs. compound events, experimental vs. theoretical probability and dependent vs. independent events. They also learned a little about psychology as they designed marketing materials to lure players toward their games! A true “learning by doing” unit, this event is a perennial favorite.
