Cougars Fade Late in Tight Matchup

Stefan Borowski
In a game that went back and forth, the Cougars were unable to hold onto their lead late as the fall to GFA by a score of 69-60.
Hit the by injury bug as of late, the Cougars went into the game with a squad of only 8 players, meaning playing time for everyone was going to increase significantly for everyone. Each player knew the importance of foul trouble, controlling the tempo of the game, and playing above and beyond were going to be keys to success in the game against GFA.

In the first half, the Cougars got off to a great start. Chris Zegarra of dominated the inside of the paint against their 3-2 zone scoring 5 quick points to get things going. From the perimeter, Shane Baldwin hit two 3's in the first quarter to help stretch the defense. Jav Peters and Ian Delahaunty each drove the ball extremely well giving GFA fits all over the court. Quinn Galante stole the show though in the second quarter. Coming off a long term ankle injury, he decided to make his presence known by scoring 10 points in the second quarter, including two 3's from the corner to give us a nice 10 point cushion. However, GFA roared back by catching the boys off guard on defense and hitting some easy put backs on misses to go on a 11-0 run to give them a one point lead at halftime.

The boys knew they had to start the 3rd quarter well in order to get the momentum back. Shane Baldwin and Jav Peters led the way with their great leadership and play. Shane had 9 points in the 3rd, while Jav added 7 of his own, as well as playing tremendous defense on GFA's super quick PG.

The fourth quarter finally came and it was a back and forth battle. In the end, missed free throws and defensive lapses were crucial for NCCS as we were unable to recover from them as GFA slowly pulled away in the final 2 minutes, winning by a score of 69-60. The boys played hard though for the entirety of the game and the coaches are extremely proud of them. They fought hard, but know the basketball games can be decided in a few moments. They have two games remaining on their schedule and hope to recover from this loss with 2 wins to close out the season.

GAME NOTES: Shane Baldwin led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Jav Peters with 14, Quinn Galante with 13, Chris Zegarra with 8 and Ian Delehaunty with 6.
