Emotional Intelligence Expert Marc Brackett Visits May 11

As part of the school’s ongoing work with ‘mission skills’, Head of School Dr. Robert P. Macrae has invited Marc Brackett, Ph.D., director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to conduct a professional development workshop for faculty and staff on May 11. Dr. Brackett will also host a forum for parents the same day. Country School has been a pioneer and leader in a national effort to improve how schools teach the critical skills of curiousity, creativity, collaboration, resilience, ethics and time management.
“Understanding and recognizing the role of emotions in schools, in the learning process itself, and in raising children is absolutely critical,” said Dr. Macrae. “Our ‘mission skills’ really complement our traditional academic skills and together lay a solid foundation for our students’ future success.”

Dr. Brackett is a senior research scientist in psychology, and a faculty fellow in the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy at Yale University. His research focuses on the role of emotional intelligence in decision making, relationships, mental health, and both academic and workplace performance.

He is the co-creator of RULER, an evidence-based approach to teaching social and emotional learning that has been adopted by more than 1,000 public and private schools. For the last three years, he has collaborated with Facebook on projects to help adolescents manage online bullying, provide resources for children, families, and educators; and to help high schools build more positive learning environments.

Dr. Brackett regularly consults with school systems and corporations around the world and his research has been featured in The New York Times and Time Magazine; he also is a frequent guest on National Public Radio. Read his full biography.

“I’ve seen Dr. Brackett present at the annual Mission Skills Assessment national conference in Chicago as well as at a head of school conference and he is just terrific,” said Dr. Macrae. “This professional development workshop will be a great way to launch our faculty summer work and redouble our efforts on promoting ‘mission skills’.”
