Country School Hires New Head of Upper School

Alex Wellman will join the New Canaan Country School community as Head of Upper School at the start of the 2017-2018 school year. 


“This search attracted many strong candidates,” said Head of School Rob Macrae. “We were looking for someone with a passion for education to bring energy and vision to our Upper School, and we have certainly found that in Alex.”
 
Alex is currently the Assistant Director of College Guidance and Sophomore Class Academic Dean at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, CT, where he has worked since 2008. He has held several other positions there over the years: Freshman Class Dean, Upper School Admission Associate and English teacher. Prior to his work at GFA, Alex taught English and Spanish for one year at Kimball Union Academy. Alex holds an M.A. in English Literature and a B.A. in English and Spanish Literature from Middlebury College.
 
Here are a few of the adjectives used by parents and faculty to describe Alex: “thoughtful; personable; sincere; passionate; enthusiastic; approachable; articulate, thoughtful and extremely genuine; confident; levelheaded; engaging and intelligent.”
 
The following members of the Search Committee played an important role in the hiring process: Parents’ Association President Lisa Alpaugh, Upper School Teacher Barbara van der Kieft Latimer ’85, Upper School Teacher Will McDonough, Assistant Head of School Day Rosenberg, Head of Middle School Kirsten Rosolen, Director of Secondary School Counseling Lisa Schultz and Director of Community Development Lynn Sullivan.
