Blue Softball Completes a Stunning Comeback Against GCDS!

Brooke Kelly
On Monday afternoon, a frigid one for late April, Blue Softball faced off against GCDS, who proved to be an extremely worthy opponent! At the top of the first inning, Morgan Powell took the mound for NCCS, sending some beautiful pitches directly to the glove of the catcher, Margot Seiden. Despite a couple of strikeouts, GCDS was able to complete two runs to get themselves on the scoreboard early. When it was Blue’s turn at bat, the team was determined to close this early gap. NCCS was successful, scoring three runs to lead by one at the end of the first inning. Each NCCS batter was spiritedly rooted on by organized cheers and chants from her teammates. GCDS had an impressive showing in the second inning, and despite some wonderful hitting and fielding from NCCS, by the end of the inning GCDS had taken the lead by scoring five runs and stifling Blue’s offensive efforts. At this point of the game, it would have been easy for the team to hang their heads, particularly on a chilly afternoon. However, at the top of the third, with Katey Charnin as pitcher and Rheda Young as catcher, the Cougars turned it on and got three quick outs without allowing any runs. During Blue’s turn at bat, it was clear that they were not willing to walk away from this game without a fight. NCCS had many hits, both singles and doubles, and nearly every girl on the roster got on base! After cycling through ten batters, the alternative to getting three outs, NCCS had managed to score five runs to take a lead of 8-7 just in time to secure the win! Perhaps the most exciting and impressive aspect of the game was the comradery and selflessness of the girls. On many occasions, the girls beamed when their hit was caught, knowing that their efforts had helped a teammate advance to a further base. Whether while scoring a run or laughing off a mistake, each member of Blue Softball took advantage of learning opportunities and the team continues to become more knowledgeable about the game each day! Well done, team!
