New Canaan Country School Head of School Tim Bazemore was named a Horizons Hero at the Horizons National Annual Dinner. The Horizons Hero Award recognizes those individuals who contribute in extraordinary and sometimes unexpected ways to the Horizons National network. Bazemore is the first head of school to receive the award.
Horizons is an educational enrichment program serving low-income students with a broad range of academic abilities. Horizons operates as a three-way partnership between independent schools (and colleges) campuses and resources, local public school children and the Horizons program curriculum. Students accepted to the program spend six weeks each summer on these campuses engaged in a program that blends high quality academics with cultural enrichment and confidence-building activities.
In presenting the award, Lorna Smith, CEO of Horizons National explained why Bazemore was selected:
“He has been a consistent and ardent supporter of the flagship 50-year old program at New Canaan Country School. He has championed Horizons at the National Association of Independent Schools Conference, and other meetings and convenings at our request, to encourage schools to open Horizons programs. Tim, along with Leah Kimmet and the Horizons at NCCS board, led the creation of the Horizons Fairfield County Council, bringing together representatives from each of the 5 programs now operating here.”
In his acceptance remarks, Bazemore noted that the public-private partnership between Horizons and the Country School favorably influenced his decision to accept the position of Head of School back in 2000. “My wife, Lisa, and I were very impressed with the concept of utilizing private school resources to enrich the lives of those in the greater community. We felt like the Horizons at New Canaan Country School model could, and should, be replicated beyond New Canaan.”
