    Tapping into Tradition: A Sweet Celebration of the Season

  • Fourth Graders Celebrate Indigenous Cultures

    Fourth-grade students brought history to life as they shared stories, songs, dances, reflections, and handcrafted displays at a special Celebration of American Indians on March 3. As part of the event, students also demonstrated ring and pin, a traditional American Indian game they had recreated in Woodshop class.
    The celebration marked the culmination of a half-year, interdisciplinary study designed to deepen students’ understanding of the Indigenous peoples who once populated our region.

    This past week, the Carver Dining Hall was transformed into an international forum as New Canaan Country School’s ninth graders presented World Congress—a capstone experience that challenged students to explore some of the world’s most pressing issues and present their findings in a TED Talk-style format.

    Beginners (ages 4 and 5) delighted in their annual Lantern Walk—a magical evening of shadow puppet plays, song, and a glowing lantern procession held in their Early Childhood piazza after sunset. This much-anticipated event serves as the culmination of a study on light and dark, allowing students to explore the interplay of illumination and shadow in creative and meaningful ways.

    In a hands-on exploration of design and engineering, third-grade students in Chris Lawler’s woodshop class recently created their own animal cars. The project combined creativity with practical skill-building as students sketched out their designs, carefully colored them, and then used a jigsaw to cut their chosen shapes from wood. After attaching wheels, they tested their cars on a ramp to assess performance and make any necessary adjustments.

    Middle School was filled with laughter, creativity, and connection Thursday as fifth and sixth grade students and parents came together for MS Arts Morning! Designed as an event for families to enjoy together, the morning's activity featured a unique and interactive art experience: students drew portraits of their parents—first without looking at the paper, and then while looking—and added color to bring them to life.
