Country School Boys Place Second at GCDS Basketball Tournament

New Canaan Country School Boys’ varsity basketball placed second among the five independent schools who participated in the annual tournament held Sat., Jan. 21 in Greenwich.

In the opening game against Indian Mountain School, the boys started off shooting the ball extremely well, distributing it to multiple players for easy buckets. IMS had a player who tried to keep them in the game with four 3 pointers of his own. Ninth grader Desmond Pratt of Trumbull scored 20 points in the condensed game. Country School would ultimately win 40-28.

In the second game, against New York City’s Buckley School, the Country School Cougars controlled the game with eighth graders Aaron Watkins of Norwalk and Jackson Alvord of New Canaan playing great defense. Alvord scored 4 points of his own and dished the ball well for several easy assists. Pratt shot well again and had 13 points while ninth grader Shane Baldwin of Darien had 11. Country School won 37-15.

After a short break, the boys took on Rumsey Hall who tried to control the tempo of the game. Ninth grader Ian Delehaunty of New Canaan came to the rescue with great plays. He attacked the basket and got to the foul line to help the Cougars regain their confidence; he would finish the game with 7 points. With the game still close, Baldwin went 9-0 on free throws to provide a comfortable lead. Eighth grader Diego Pepe of Ridgefield was strong on defense, shutting down their big guard. The Cougars won 25-16 and headed into what would ultimately be the championship game against Greenwich Country Day School.

In the finals, the Cougars started fast. Ninth grader Carter George of Darien played strong and would finish the game with 8 points. Ninth grader Austin Andersen of Wilton covered well on defense, while eighth grader Sam Eglin of Darien provided help on offense to close the gap to 4 points. Ninth grader Nick Sosnow of Darien also contributed significantly, but Country School succumbed to Greenwich Country Day School 30-25.

“We are very proud of the boys for how hard they played all weekend” said Coach Stefan Borowski. “They displayed great team basketball and individual skill throughout.”
