Second Graders Write Poems About Skin Color

As part of a study on identity, second grade students have been writing poems describing the color of their skin.
In art class, each student mixed paint to match his or her own skin tone as closely as possible. Poems and paintings are currently on view on the Grade 2 bulletin board located in the Welles Building.

The following six poems were shared during the March 30 Lower School assembly by the student authors who recited them aloud.

My skin is
as tan as a peach.

My skin is
like dropping honey.

My skin is
as peachy as an apricot.

My skin is
as creamy as cookie dough.

-Ethan

My skin is like…
inside of ginger.

My cheeks turn red
when my sister grabs them.

My skin is the color of wheat.

-Arthur

I am the color of warm cocoa,
Brown,
Kind of like hot cocoa,
And other colors
Like toast and chocolate.

-Riley

I am tan like a cinnamon bite,
like the kind people eat in the night.

The color of my skin is tan,
but I call it as many different names as I can.

Cocoa, ginger, and coffee,
No, not even toffee

Cinnamon bite is the color of my skin
To me, my skin and I always win.

The color of my skin is like a cinnamon bite,
the kind people eat in the night.

-Anjali

Me

The color of my skin
is
Florida tan.

Soft as a peach
and
warm as a jacket

-James

I am the color of a freshly baked sugar cookie,
White like a snowflake,
But a little bit tan.
And my blue veins stand out well!
I like my skin.
I hope others like their skin too!
You should like your skin too!

-Kat
