Eighth Graders Build "Puff Mobiles"

Eighth graders designed and built small vehicles as a culminating activity of their force and motion unit. Using a variety of tech tools and overcoming the obstacles of social distancing, the students shared ideas, documented their work, recorded videos, and had a final group Zoom call to determine whose car went the farthest.
From MS & US Science Teacher Margaret Mackey:
"They collected everyday materials from home to design and build a small vehicle that can be propelled using air, a "Puff Mobile".

During the design phase, students met in small breakout groups on Zoom to share their "Puff Mobile" plans with each other and receive feedback on possible improvements to their plans from other students. Throughout the design, building, and testing process, students documented their work by recording short videos on Flipgrid, allowing them to see how the process is going for each other.

Students participated in a live Zoom call to conduct the final test of their "Puff Mobile" and determine whose design was able to travel the farthest. Students then applied their knowledge of Newton's laws of motion and the forces of friction to explain why their "Puff Mobile" was successful or not."
