Second Annual Bazemore Society Breakfast

Over forty guests attended the Bazemore Society Breakfast on Jan. 20, 2015. They heard from Jackie Roberson, Horizons Dean of Students and Academic Coach and Social Worker in the Norwalk Public Schools, Dora De Andrade, a mother of three Horizons program participants, John Hastings, Horizons Summer Program teacher and NCCS fourth grade teacher. The breakfast concluded with remarks from Tim Bazemore, who had traveled from Portland, Ore. to attend the event.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”
Malcolm X said it and Jackie Roberson, guest speaker for the January 20 Bazemore Society Breakfast, lives it.

Jackie Roberson, Horizons Dean of Students and Academic Coach, and Social Worker in the Norwalk Public Schools, shared deeply moving and personal stories of young people overcoming hardship and adversity to find success in life with the 40 guests in attendance at the second annual breakfast.

Jackie dedicates her life to reaching, teaching and advocating for youth. She empowers young people to develop resilience and not make excuses for personal challenges but to rise above them to achieve the confidence and courage to persevere in the face of difficulty.

The second speaker, Dora De Andrade, is the mother of three Horizons program participants spanning 25 years. Her middle child, Daniel, attended Country School in the Middle and Upper divisions and has recently been accepted to his first choice college; her eldest son is an Adjunct Professor in Fordham University’s Sociology Department.

Dora recounted her family’s personal experience as immigrants from Venezuela entering a new world, learning a new language and seeking employment opportunities while navigating the public educational system for her three children along the way. For Dora and her family, Horizons has provided guidance and direction in all areas of their lives and as a result, become an extended family with which they all maintain important connections.

John Hastings, Horizons Summer Program teacher and NCCS Fourth grade teacher, was the third speaker who reiterated with humor and passion the interdependency between NCCS and Horizons and the value of each to the other.

It is with gratitude and appreciation that we recognize Bazemore Society members for generously supporting the educational aspirations of young people from the Horizons program to attend New Canaan Country School.
