Sixth Grade Visits MET to Study Michelangelo

Sixth graders visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Thursday, Jan. 18 to view a historic exhibit “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer.” The New York Times has called the show of 133 drawings by the Renaissance artist, which runs through Feb. 12, “a tour de genius.”

The students are currently studying the Renaissance and the period that focuses on the exceptional painting and sculpture of artists like Michelangelo.

“This was not a general trip to the museum. It was a focused visit about something we are studying right now,” said sixth grade teacher Fraser Randolph. “That made it especially meaningful and relevant.”

“I had only seen Michelangelo’s work on the smartboard, and now I was seeing the actual drawings he sketched using his own eyes before he made the paintings,” said sixth grader Annie Nichols. “I could see all the tiny details.”

Students brought notepads and pencils with them into the exhibit and were encouraged to sketch any work or part of a work that interested them. “It was really interactive, which is important for Middle School students,” said Mr. Randolph.

Annie sketched a woman’s face drawing inspiration from the artist’s sketch of a section of the Sistine Chapel with St. John the Baptist. Her friend, Elsa, drew a crow. “We were doing what Michelangelo did – sketching.”
