Fifth Graders Keep Track of Olympics

For the past two weeks, fifth graders have come to school eager to update the Olympic medal count on the bulletin board outside of their classrooms.
Fifth grade teachers have incorporated the Olympics into their study of Vikings in social studies by keeping track of teams Norway, Denmark and Sweden, once Viking homelands. In English class, students wrote research papers on an Olympic sport, athlete or a country’s delegation. As a community-building exercise, classes divided themselves into teams Norway, Denmark and Sweden and competed in Olympic-like events.

“This has been so cross-curricular,” said fifth grade teacher Julie Porter. “We’ve incorporated the Olympics into reading, writing, social studies, math, gym and current events. The kids have been so engaged and are ready to talk about all different aspects of the games throughout the day.”
