Country School Names Horizons Scholar

New Canaan Country School has named Derrick Francis as the 2019-2020 Horizons Scholar. He will attend New Canaan Country School this fall as a fourth grader and was selected from the Horizons candidates who apply to Country School.
In naming Horizons Scholars, the school looks for Horizons students who combine a strong commitment to academic work with an equally strong commitment to character skills.

Horizons was founded on the campus of New Canaan Country School more than 55 years ago as a summer program and has grown into a year-round program that serves approximately 400 students, primarily from Stamford and Norwalk each year. Horizons builds brighter futures for K-12 students through academic and enrichment programs – nurturing potential, cultivating a safe and supportive community, and inspiring individual dreams.

“Derrick works very hard and we are so proud of him,” said Derrick Francis Sr., his father. Derrick is a Trumbull resident who attended Stamford Charter School of Excellence. Derrick’s sister, Sydni, will also begin at Country School this fall as a fifth grader.

Head of School Aaron Cooper presented the award to Derrick during a special musical event this summer, which was attended by a large audience of Horizons students, faculty, parents, special guests and colleagues. “Derrick has everything we look for in a Country School student. He loves learning and cares about being a part of our community. I have no doubt that he will thrive here,” he said.
