Sixth Grade Students Capture Civic Engagement Through Their Artwork

Six grade students embarked on a journey of civic engagement when asked to incorporate words with pictures to illustrate a multitude of global and local issues that were on their minds. The idea for the project came from art teacher Liz Ferran after she listened to a piece on WNYC radio, entitled “Spotted Lanternflies”.  VIEW the carousel of student artwork.
Spotted Lanternflies, an invasive species that poses a danger to trees and food supplies, was moving up to the Northeast. It was a plea to "get the word out" to the public to help to eliminate them. After working with the sixth graders on this project, Liz quickly learned that they had other issues on their minds that they wanted to express and post throughout the school. After students brainstormed, they started to create artwork that illustrated pressing topics from their perspective.
