Intentional Education for the Most Pivotal Years

The choice to educate children in Pre-K through Grade 9 is intentional and supported by research. We believe learning happens best in a deeply relational setting offering continuity. This begins with preschoolers and continues through the early teens — as children are building a strong academic foundation and solidifying their sense of self.  New Canaan Country School teachers are expert guides through these elementary and early adolescence years.

“It’s like a good book that gets even better the further you get into it.”
We offer an intentional arc, where younger children enjoy age-appropriate role models — “buddies” — in middle school and upper school peers. Because we are fully focused on this formative period, our teachers understand each developmental phase well. They fully appreciate how being safe and known is connected to future success.

There is no rush to grow up too fast at Country School. Children practice taking risks in a safe environment free from the judgment of older peers. This setting reduces challenging influences that can increase anxiety. Students here experience learning with child-like wonder, curiosity, and joy.

The ninth grade year at Country School is its own gift. Our oldest students focus on high school level academics in a comfortable community where they are known. They take on leadership roles, chairing committees, captaining Varsity teams, and  mentoring young children. Ninth graders know who they are and what their strengths are — a gift when searching for the right-fit high school. Our students go on to attend some of the most competitive secondary schools in the nation. We hear back that they are noted for their preparedness, natural leadership and their ability not only to seize opportunity—but to make it their own.”
