Joy, Light and Learning
for Our Youngest Learners

Young children are natural explorers, curious about the world around them. This is the time when they learn to love learning. Our open, airy, sunny space just for them, the Thacher Building, makes the most of those traits. Beginners and Kindergarteners learn and play in large, open classrooms through an approach inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Our building, named after former Head of School Nicholas S. Thacher, is built around the Piazza, the large central area. Every Friday, it is the site of a community circle called Gathering, where Early Childhood students sing songs, listen to stories, and are encouraged to share their own ideas and voices.

Early Childhood Learning Spaces

Each space in this building is uniquely designed and used to support learning and growing specifically for the youngest students. Their development takes center stage.

  • A Place for Art, Music + Gathering

    The Piazza

This is a space designed so movement, art, and music are intentionally built into each day. The Piazza provides a crossroads where children from different classrooms connect and where they practice their burgeoning social skills — making eye contact, greeting a stranger, smiling, and welcoming a newcomer to the place they call home. It is also a place where members of the Early Childhood community gather for special events, performances, and collaborative projects, fostering a strong sense of belonging and togetherness. Whether it’s a morning sing-along, an afternoon art show, or a celebration of seasonal festivals, the Piazza is the heart of our vibrant early learning environment.
