Our Beginners through Grade 9 curriculum is deliberately designed to foster students’ intellectual and emotional growth, while preparing them for increasingly more challenging work. A Journey of Learning + Growth

At Country School, every day is a chance to grow. Our whole-child approach nurtures each student’s intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. From the earliest years through ninth grade, students explore their interests, build strong academic foundations, and develop the skills to thrive—guided by teachers who foster curiosity, creativity, and confidence.

Early Childhood

Inquiry is at the heart of our teaching and learning in Early Childhood. We encourage children to wonder and explore, to step into the unknown, to take risks and to be unconstrained by right answers. Teachers pose questions to help children connect to previous learning, to engage conversations and to deepen and extend understanding. Our curriculum is deliberately designed to develop our students’ intellectual capacity and nurture their insatiable curiosity. We stretch our students and offer them opportunities to innovate, create and play together within a community of learners.

Lower School

In Lower School, our students are developing focus and self-control. They are capable of a higher level of academic challenge while still experiencing the joy and wonder of learning. Our curriculum builds upon the foundational skills of literacy and computation through the exploration of literature, math, science, social studies and Spanish. Just as important, through the use of class discussion, teachable moments and individual attention, our faculty helps students negotiate their budding social, emotional and behavioral growth.

Middle School

In Middle School, students are given more responsibility as they continue to work towards mastery of their academic competency. They develop their independent approaches to learning, such as study skills and time management practices, and push their creative and critical thinking. They hone their ability to apply their knowledge toward more sophisticated analysis and synthesis across subjects and disciplines while discovering and nurturing their personal interests.

Upper School

Building on the passion for learning nurtured in their earlier years, our Upper School students are developmentally prepared to tackle intensive critical thinking, analysis, and preparation for the nation’s most selective secondary schools. They practice leadership and collaboration, responding to important challenges around integrity, character, and responsibility both individually and collectively. Our Upper School students don’t just seize opportunities; they create them. 

As a result, they experience the interconnectedness of school life: how collaboration with teachers fosters individual autonomy, how close work with peers encourages independent thinking, and how intrinsic motivation aids in performance.

  • The Best of Both Worlds

    Ninth Grade Year

    The ninth grade year at Country School represents the best of both worlds. Academically, it is a student’s first year of high school — from the rigor of the content taught right down to the student’s performance in the course becoming part of their high school transcript. Yet, experientially it’s a student’s final year in an environment that they’ve had the benefit of knowing, often for multiple years. The experiences students are afforded fall in line with those that many don’t get until they’re fully entrenched in high school (and often not until their senior year, at that).
