Showing Heart: Girls' Varsity Cougars Comeback from Two-Nil Down (Again!)

Sean Robb
Two quality first-half goals from Sacred Heart gave the hosts a daunting lead, but Girls' Varsity Soccer once again clawed its way back into the match, scoring a winner in the final three minutes.
The squad discussed goals of focus and simply eschewing losing from its collective DNA, as a three-game streak had snuck up on a team that had started the season quite strong. In the opening minutes, the futbolistas were focused and moved the ball fluidly through midfield, aided greatly by the return of the clever passing of Holly in the center-midfield. But despite the decent start, Convent of the Sacred Heart struck twice impressively, once on a thirty yard cross from the right corner, and the second on a thirty-yard diagonal ball to a streaking right-midfielder who finished coolly.

The Cougars were determined to get back in the game, however. It was a move down the right channel that finally unlocked the Sacred Heart defense, as flank-midfielder Riley found the always-active Talbot out wide, and the latter cut in and passed to her strike partner, Lilly, who managed to poke a fine left-footed finish into the far corner from 14 yards out. Soon after the opposing coaching could be heard calling for the referee to blow the halftime whistle, as the final five minutes of the first stanza featured consistent pressure from the visitors. Sushmita pressurized the CSH sweeper relentlessly, while Janse and Meghan gave the Cougars a boost of energy on the flanks. The hosts breathed a sigh of relief when the whistle finally came.

In the second half, Anna, Sophie and Caitlin kept the hosts at bay and initiated possession with intelligent passes out of the defense. Another bout of pressure led to the equalizer, as the third corner of the half taken by Anna was pounced on by a resilient Molly, who rippled the net with a low right-footed drive. With the game locked at deuces, it was the hosts' turn to put the pressure on. Intelligent runs down their right flank once again led to scoring chances, but goalkeeper Laura was up to the task with impressive saves with both her hands and feet. She did need a bit of help from her defensive centermidfielder, Joia, who helped shield off attackers so the Country School keeper could collect a shot that had she had parried toward the center of the goal-mouth and stopped just four yards from the goal line. Nina and Avery gave the Cougars vital minutes during this run of pressure, hustling up and down the midfield.

Heading into the final five minutes, the flow of the game changed completely. Audrey made an incisive run through three defenders before finding Talbot on the left side of the penalty area, one-on-one with the right back. Talbot deked the Sacred Heart defender, cutting back to her right. With her teammates making several runs in the box, Talbot caught the Convent keeper guessing she would cross and ripped a right-footed shot into the back of the net. The team celebrated, then collected themselves impressively, shifting to a 4-5-1 to comfortably see out the final three minutes.
