The Cougars confidently took players on the dribble, moved the ball crisply and applied constant pressure in the opening half to secure a second consecutive victory.
A mild, overcast October afternoon on a perfectly damp natural surface at Winward was the backdrop for another fine team performance for the Varsity Girls' Soccer team. Two minutes into the match, co-captain Eleanor scored a fine individual goal. Using her teammates runs down the flanks as decoys, she sliced through the center of the defense and laced the ball into the bottom corner from close range. In the 7th minutes, one of Maggie's excellent passes found Sam down the left channel, and Eleanor bagged her second after controlling the lofted cross. Her strike partner made it 3-0 two minutes later after beating two defenders on the dribble after a pass combination in midfield.
The hosts continued to compete and put pressure on the back line, but Kit calmly guided the defense from the center, cleaning up any counterattacks and spraying precise passes all over the pitch. Meanwhile, her outside backs also played soundly, with Freya holding a firm line and playing out of several pressure situations and Julia communicating outstandingly from her right back position. Mabel led by example with intelligent movement in defensive center-midfield and tough tackles throughout the match. Opal and Kayla came into the flank midfield positions, providing energy in the wide areas.
At the 18-minute mark, Ellie L. had a fierce strike destined for the right side of the net blocked by a last-ditch dive by a center defender. Four minutes later, Eleanor hammered in a free kick from a tight angle to pad the lead. Then, in the closing minutes of the first half, Olivia deservedly got a goal as she pounced on a cross at the far post after she had put in an excellent shift at right midfield, and Sam rounded out the scoring with a calm finish after cutting in to strike with her opposite foot.
In the second half, co-captain Ellie R. shifted from playing in attacking center midfield to the center of defense and helped keep her team keep a second consecutive clean sheet. Emily was not forced into many saves, but when she was called into action, she came off her line confidently and once again distributed her passes effectively throughout the match. Caroline played at forward throughout the second half where she had finished the first half and helped the Cougars control possession. It was another good team performance in which the Varsity squad moved the ball well, played with great energy, finished impressively and showed great sportsmanship.
