Cougars Outlast Bruins in Instant Classic

In what will surely go down as an instant classic in the pantheon of JV Boys Basketball victories, the NCCS Cougars defeated the Brunswick Bruins 41-40 today in front of an awesome home crowd.

This was a back-and-forth game from the jump, as the Brunswick boys came to play. They relentlessly attacked the paint and the glass early and often, generating all sorts of second chance points at close range. However, behind some tremendous shooting, especially from PG Griff Overbay (who tied for the team lead with 10 points today), the Cougars never fell too far behind, and the game was all square at 10 heading into the second quarter.

At this point, the Cougars fell asleep at the wheel and allowed the rough and tumble Bruins to secure the lead, which they worked up to five midway through the second quarter. But thanks to some excellent close-range lefty lay-ins from G/F Graeson Smith (eight points on the day) and a three ball from G/F Townsend "T" LeConey, NCCS closed the gap to three points at half.

As the second half rolled around, the game continued to go back and forth. The highlight of the quarter was a well-executed Maverick (good thing T remembered where to go at the very last second) play that finished with a picture-perfect three ball from G Dezy Springer who caught the ball in rhythm and splashed it down with a swish. 32-29 Bruins going into the fourth.

And what a fourth quarter it was! This was C Colin Buda's time to shine. As the middle-man in the zone, he received some great feeds to the middle of the paint, setting up a series of layups and midrange jumpers to bring the score to a tie game. 8 of Buda's 10 points came in this final frame, and the Cougars needed every single one of them. As the clock hit ninety seconds, the Cougars were down one point and initiated a full-court press. Even though they hadn't practiced it before, the boys amped up the pressure, forcing several consecutive turnovers that facilitated Cougar scoring chances. After G/F Graeson Smith and C Colin Buda stepped up with some incredibly clutch shooting from the free throw line, the score was 41-38 with twelve seconds to go.

In the game's waning moments, Brunswick took the ball and hustled down the court, but instead of looking for a game-tying three point shot, they drove down the paint and scored a quick two with four seconds left. But, G Matt Visokey made an extremely heads up play and quickly inbounded the ball to Griff who was able to escape the defense before they could set up their press and dribble out the rest of the clock. 41-40, final. Cougars on top! So much fun everybody! See you on Tuesday when we take on the Lukies!
