Time to pop the sparkling apple cider! Undefeated! What was started back all the way in November during tryouts was finished today in a 36-11 victory over St. Luke's - a dream undefeated season for the NCCS JV Cougars! Great work, fellas!
The Cougs started out HOT today. The Lukies began by deploying a soft 2-3 zone, so the boys went to work from the outside. Sharpshooting GDezy Springer got the fun going, splashing down a long two followed by a perfect triple to put us up 5-0. After a beautiful fast break lay-in from C Colin Buda, the first unit switched out with NCCS up 7-0. The second unit continued to relentlessly attack the middle of the zone, and after two inside buckets from F Townsend "T" LeConey, as well as a continued wave of aggressive defense, NCCS led 11-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cougars blew the game wide open with smothering defense and quick transition fast break attacks. Buda took over the game, adding nine points, two steals, and four boards in a four minute lightning strike. G/F Graeson Smith stacked the stat sheet during this four minute burst as well, adding two points, six boards, two steals, and an assist. With four minutes to go in the second quarter, NCCS had ballooned their lead up to 22 points. By halftime, Cougs led 24-6.
In the second half, our priorities shifted to preserving the lead and working the ball around the court on offense. C Chase Bell finished a a tremendous baseline drive pass from Graeson, F Evan Frey drained a midranger from the corner (we will ignore the fact that he loudly shouted "No" after taking this shot), and Dezy added another layup to the tally to put the Cougars up 22 by the end of the third. By the fourth quarter, it was all over. At game's end, NCCS had prevailed 36-11.
WHAT A TERRIFIC SEASON! Thanks to all the parents for coming out to watch, but thanks most of all to the boys. Great hustle and dedication all year. Those qualities will take you far, fellas, no matter what sport you are playing (but I sure hope it is basketball). Now that the work is done, let's have some fun in practice the next week!
