Cougars Survive Late Surge by Bobcats, Win Triller by 1

It came down to the conversions today, folks! On this beautiful and sunny fall day, the NCCS White Cougars hung on to win 30-29 against the Bi-Cultural Bobcats, earning the boys their first victory of the season.

It was an offensive showcase in the first half. Bi-Cultural got the scoring started with an eight play marathon scoring drive to go up 7-0, but the Cougars immediately answered the call with a touchdown of their own. QB Townsend LeConey found WR Bowen Kelley in the corner of the end zone on the third play of the drive, and the Cougars went up 8-7.

The Cougs and Bi-Cultural continued to trade scores. #24 on Bi-Cultural showed some real burst and took a screen pass to the house, but Townsend found RB Finn Dickinson in the end zone to tie things up right after. The Cougs followed this up with the first defensive stop of the game when they denied Bi-Cultural a first down, and following a brilliant two minute drill, the Cougs tallied on one more score before the half when Townsend found Bowen again in the end zone on a  short crossing route. 22-15 at half.

After halftime, the Cougars built up their lead with an impressive drive that saw Townsend finding the end zone one more through the air, this time to WR Henry Spitz across the middle of the field. This brought the Cougar lead to 30-15, but Bi-Cultural cut that lead to 30-23 after yet another big gain from the speedy #24.

The Cougars offense stalled in the final ten minutes of the game, as Bi-Cultural forced an interception on one drive and a turnover on downs on the next. So how did the Cougars hang on for the win? Two key defensive plays. The first was a DB Finn Greig interception where he jumped a pass route across the middle of the zone, but it was the second play that made the ultimate difference. After allowing a final Bi-Cultural touchdown, the Cougars had a 30-29 lead with only the conversion to go. Bi-Cultural went for two, but the NCCS defense held the clamps down on all receivers to force a coverage sack. Ball game. NCCS 30, Bi-Cultural 29.

What a win! The Cougs now sit a 1-1 and will begin preparing for their trip to Ridgefield Academy next Tuesday. We hope to see you there!
