Healthcare documentary by NCCS Alum Matthew Heineman airs on CNN March 16 at 8 p.m.
Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, an award-winning documentary by local filmmaker Matthew Heineman, has been acquired by CNN Films and premiered on the network on Sunday March 10 at 8 pm ET. Heineman is a 1998 alumnus of New Canaan Country School and a 2012 Alumni Award winner.
CNN will show Escape Fire on March 10 at 8 and 11 pm ET; March 11 at 2 am ET; it will encore on Saturday March 16 at 8 and 11 pm ET. The film, directed and produced by Heineman and Academy Award-nominee Susan Froemke, was also released on DVD and iTunes on February 26.
After its 2012 Sundance premiere, Escape Fire won several awards at film festivals before its commercial opening in select cities on Oct. 5. The documentary has had more than 350 local screenings sponsored by hospitals, clinics, medical and business schools, professional organizations and local community groups. Locally, the Avon Theatre and the Center for Integrative Medicine & Wellness at Stamford Hospital screened it on Feb. 6 and the Darien Library on Jan. 23.
Heineman, 29, now living in New York City, graduated from Dartmouth College in 2005 and headed off in an RV traveling the country for three months with three friends to start his first documentary. Our Time — a feature documentary about what it’s like to be young in today’s America, premiered on the Documentary Channel in 2011 and simultaneously on numerous digital platforms. He has directed a number of short films and commercials, and for two years he collaborated with Froemke and a team at HBO on the groundbreaking, Emmy-nominated HBO series, The Alzheimer’s Project, which aired in May 2009. Heineman and Froemke have been working on ESCAPE FIRE for 3 l/2 years.
