IN THE NEWS: Two Alumni Selected as "Superteens"

Maggie Basta '13 and John Fox '13 have been selected as "Superteens" by New Canaan Darien Magazine. New Canaan Darien Magazine, September-October 2015
MAGGIE BASTA
Maggie Basta’s claim to fame is her speed. As a forward on the soccer field for Greenwich Academy she scored twenty goals in twenty games last season, many of them on breakaways. The New Canaan teen plays for Region 1 on the Olympic Development Program team, an experience that sent her to Italy last spring to compete in an international U-19 tournament. (Her team, the only one representing the United States, went undefeated.) The Connecticut Girls Soccer Coaches Association selected Maggie to its All-State team. It’s when she slows down, though, that Maggie really shines. In the classroom, she earned high honors and a 4.0 GPA as a freshman, sophomore and junior, even with a full load of AP courses. She loves art and graphic computer design, and excels in Spanish and biology, both of which she puts to good use when she drops in at Rainbow Pediatrics, her mother’s practice in Stamford, to spend time with the patients. “My mom [born in Korea] uses Spanish a lot in her workplace and she’s always helped me with it,” says Maggie, who often reads to children in the waiting room. “I’m happy to do it. The kids are adorable.” Maggie hopes to become a doctor one day, but she knows that a pre-med curriculum will require a lot of time and commitment, which she’ll be short of since she plans to continue playing soccer. Maggie, a senior, has verbally committed to Harvard University.

JOHN FOX
High school senior John Fox doesn’t need to worry about where to go to college: He’s committed to attending the University of Virginia, a perennial lacrosse powerhouse, where John’s uncle, Drew Fox, had played. These days, John, a midfielder at Brunswick School, is a powerhouse himself, a player known for being tough and tenacious. His teammates in both lacrosse and football (he’s a linebacker) have elected him captain. John has been selected to the Under Armour boys All-America lacrosse team, New England, and he also plays for the Connecticut Chargers. Each day after school, he drives to practice at the athletic facility on the Westchester line, where he stays until 6 p.m. While that makes for a long afternoon, John says it’s what he looks forward to most. “I love to practice. The team’s really close and our coaches make it fun.” His weekends, as well, can be consumed with lacrosse, as traveling far and wide to play other teams in the prep school league can take awhile. “As a freshman it was tough, but travel helps bond the team. You step outside of your comfort zone.” In the summer, he helps run youth lacrosse clinics in Greenwich. “The kids are awesome,” he says. In school, his favorite class is history. He’s an honors student intrigued with how the role of the president has changed. He plans to deepen his understanding of U.S. history while studying in Virginia.
