Comeback Cougars Down Lukies in Opening Thriller

How bout them Cougars! Despite the gloomy weather, there was nothing but sunshine and rainbows out on the gridiron for the NCCS White Cougars as they defeated their crosstown rival St. Lukes in an incredible comeback win.

The boys moved right down the field on the game's opening possession, starting off the season with a touchdown pass from one captain (QB Topher Kern) to another (RB Archer MacLear) on fourth down. However, the Lukies hit a couple of deep balls for scores and tightened up their defense to take a 13-6 lead into halftime.

This is where the Cougars kicked it into a new gear. The boys forced a turnover on downs and then scored a quick touchdown on a dart from Topher Kern to Jack Reilly who made a tremendous sliding grab in the endzone. However, on the next drive, St. Lukes responded with a rushing touchdown on a jet sweep, putting them up 20-12. But the Cougars would not quit. On second down of the ensuing drive, QB Griffin Stallmeyer put the ball in Archer MacLear's chest and he did the rest of the work, bulldozing down the field for a half-field touchdown run of his own. However, the St. Luke's D held on the conversion, and NCCS remained down 20-18.

The Cougars needed a stop, and boy did we get one. On second down, Justin Stannard snagged an interception out of the air on a pass down the middle of the field, setting up a short field for the Cougars. With a minute left to play, QB Topher Kern found WR Crey Savage in the endzone for a contested touchdown grab that sent both receiver and cornerback to the turf, but Crey held on, and the Cougars took the lead.

In the end, the Cougars forced one final incompletion in the endzone to end the game at 24-20. Heck of a win, fellas! See you next week for our Tuesday tilt @ Bicultural Day School.
